About Us
In 1880, tall ship sea captain Charles Wheeler hired Charles G. Larson, a young Swedish immigrant who became a dedicated, hardworking farm manager. Captain Wheeler passed the farm onto the young Swede who later, in turn, passed the farm to his son, Charles W. Larson, father of Wheeler Farm Gardens’ owner and manager, William Larson.
Bill and wife Evelyn have been in the greenhouse and garden center business since 1968 and have retained the "Wheeler" name out of respect for the Captain and an ongoing dedication to preserving the same level of quality and service that has been firmly planted at Wheeler Farm for over a century.
Wheeler Farm Gardens has developed a reputation in central Connecticut for superb quality of annual and perennial bedding plants and hanging baskets, and is one of the only online, retail suppliers of Alpine geraniums in the United States. The seasonal garden center is open from May through July. Wheeler Farm Gardens is located in the heart of the Connecticut River Valley in the center of the state. Just 20 miles south of Hartford, you'll find us in Portland, CT at 171 Bartlett Street off Route 17.
Be sure to visit the latest addition at Wheeler Farm Gardens – the newly built Japanese garden, an homage to the beauty and simplicity of the gardens of Japan.
